Madonna herself admitted to not being an easy mother. “Having a mother like me is more of a hindrance than anything,” she told Vanity Fair. Years earlier, in 2017, the singer told People, “Lola has a different father than Rocco, and I have four adopted children, so there are a lot of outside influences. I’m trying to make sure I impart the same wisdom and love to everyone. I’m the bad mother. I’m the one who says no. I accept this role.

In the same interview with Interview, however, Lourdes emphasizes how powerful her mother is. “She was always empowering to other women and ahead of her time. I didn’t fully understand that until I realized the importance of empowerment and what it means to be a woman,” she explained.

In August 2022, Lourdes followed in her mother’s footsteps with the release of her debut single “Lock&Key”.

“I have to save my baby”

Son of Madonna and filmmaker Guy Ritchie, Rocco Ritchie, 24, also admitted that his mother is strict. “She’s a good mother… She’s very strict, but in a good way,” he told host Ellen DeGeneres in 2012. At the time, he was touring with Madonna and completing his studies with the help of a tutor, but at 15 he decided to live with his father in London to attend a traditional school. The decision caused a custody battle between Madonna and Guy, who separated in 2016.

And Madonna suffered. During a show on the “Rebel Heart” tour in New Zealand, she dedicated a song to her son and burst into tears. Later, in Melbourne, Australia, she offered a free and intimate concert entitled “Tears of a Clown”, whose repertoire included some of her saddest songs. “Today I’m going to do something I’ve never done: drink while I sing… Please bring me a glass”, she asked, which received a “cosmopolitan”. And she said: “You all know what happened to my son Rocco. I would have enjoyed this tour more if he hadn’t disappeared so suddenly,” she said.
