After participating in an event with Macron, Geraldo Alckmin is diagnosed with Covid-19

The Vice President of the Republic and Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), has Covid-19. The information was confirmed by the politician’s advisors in a statement released on Sunday night (31).

According to the note, Alckmin “will not fulfill agendas in the Vice-Presidency and in the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services”, this Monday (1st).

According to the bulletin, “the vice president has mild symptoms and is doing well.” “He will remain at home for a prompt recovery, in accordance with medical recommendations,” says the statement.

So far, there is no information about the health status of the vice-president’s wife, Lu Alckmin. Both reside at Palácio do Jaburu, in Brasília, the official residence normally used by vice-presidents.

It is the second time that Alckmin has been diagnosed with Covid-19. He had already been infected by the new coronavirus in 2022, which prevented him from participating, in person, in the official launch of the ticket with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT)who would run for Presidency of the Republic.

A doctor by training, specializing in anesthesiology and acupuncture, Geraldo Alckmin administered the fifth dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to Lula, last year.

The last official appointment of the Vice President of the Republic was on Wednesday last week (March 27th), at the headquarters of the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp), in the capital of São Paulo.

Alckmin participated in the Brazil-France Economic Forum, an event whose guest of honor was the President of France, Emmanuel Macron. The French leader arrived at the location accompanied by Alckmin and spoke shortly after the Brazilian vice-president’s speech.

In his speech, Alckmin said that the French president’s visit had “great significance” for Brazil. “It is absolute certainty that your arrival will further strengthen the bonds of friendship, cooperation and partnership between Brazil and France, which, next year, will celebrate 200 years of diplomatic relations”, he noted.

“France is one of the biggest investors in Brazil. But we can grow our trade even further, economic complementarity in several areas”, stated the vice-president. According to Alckmin, the Lula government “placed Brazil as a major protagonist in the issue of combating climate change”. “Deforestation in the Amazon fell by 50% and Brazil’s commitment is zero deforestation,” he guaranteed.
