Even before the Federal Government signed decree 11,432/2023, which determines the distribution of sanitary pads, through the Unified Health System (SUS), the City of Timon already maintained the policy of promoting menstrual dignity in schools in the Municipal Network education.

Taking the lead in one of the most important public policies for combating menstrual poverty, the City Hall established, in 2021, the Digno Period program, enabling the distribution of sanitary pads to all students aged 11 and over, totaling almost 5 thousand students benefited monthly.

The program arose from the Bill sent by the Mayor of Timon, Dinair Veloso, and approved by the City Council. Distributions began in 2022, upon the return of in-person classes after the Covid-19 pandemic. To date, 54 thousand units of the item have been purchased and sent to schools, totaling an investment of more than 80 thousand reais.

“The distribution of this hygiene item undoubtedly contributed to a better welcome for our students at school, given that, during this period, they were often absent from classes, often not using the item at home. The City Hall’s initiative allows us to provide them with access to hygiene care and, thus, combat school dropouts, as everyone feels safe attending classes without any type of embarrassment. We are very grateful for this attentive look at our Education Network, as the well-being of students is very important for good school development.”, said Gislene Santos, manager of the Raimunda de Carvalho Sousa Municipal School, in the Cidade Nova neighborhood.

The items are delivered to the students individually, without any type of display, and students who need the item can request it, monthly, from the board of directors of the institution where they are enrolled.
