The City of São Paulo declared a state of public health emergency for dengue, this Monday (18). The capital today records 414 confirmed cases of the disease per 100,000 inhabitants. As a result, new actions were carried out, such as the support of 6.5 thousand mothers hired by POT Mães Guardiãs who will take a training course for guidance in municipal schools.

At the beginning of this month, the Municipal Department of Health (SMS) promoted, in partnership with the Municipal Department of Education (SME), the D-Day of Mobilization Against Dengue in municipal schools in the capital, which took place simultaneously with the D-Day of state mobilization against urban arboviruses, promoted by the Government of the State of São Paulo.

The occasion featured educational actions to prevent and combat dengue fever in schools and Unified Educational Centers (CEUs), and involved the distribution of one million informative folders to be distributed to students, in addition to a special program with the presence of the municipal secretary of Health and regional health coordinators.

Inspired by the actions that took place on D-Day, the educational units of the Municipal Education Network carry out several actions to raise awareness of the fight against dengue, in order to inform the community, through children and young people. At EMEF Benedito Calixto, for example, the ninth-year classes held workshops for fourth-year students and made mosquito traps that were spread throughout the school.

At CEI Elza Soares, from DRE São Mateus, the children took a walk around the Center and handed out pamphlets that they produced themselves about the fight against dengue. And at EMEI Jardim Premiano, the children made dengue mosquitoes and then went to the external area of the unit to place the mosquito in possible dengue hotspots.

These are just a few examples of what municipal schools are doing to promote awareness of the fight against dengue. The topic is discussed daily in the school environment, explaining ways to combat it and the importance of being aware of possible breeding grounds for the mosquito that transmits dengue fever.

Check out, below, the new actions carried out by the City of São Paulo to combat dengue:

  • Expansion of opening hours in all 80 AMAs (Ambulatory Medical Assistance). From Monday, the 18th, these units will have three more hours of service every day, remaining open until 10pm;
  • Reinforcement of 3,200 women hired through the Operation Work Program (POT). They will undergo training and will be distributed across the 32 sub-prefectures;
  • Support for 6.5 thousand mothers hired by POT Mães Guardians who will take a training course for guidance in municipal schools;
  • An additional 30 fogging vehicles, bringing the total number to 96;
  • Reinforcement of the awareness campaign, with banners at road intersections, bus terminals and inside bus stations and
  • New tents to care for people with symptoms, in Itaquera and São Miguel Paulista.
