One 59 year old man resident of Tennesseein the United States, was analyzed by scientists after reporting that he began to see people around him with their distorted faces. According to him, the situation began three years ago, when he saw, for the first time, his roommate with his mouth stretched out, ears pointed up, eyes slanted and nostrils dilated.

Since then, the fear increased because everyone I passed seemed to have the same appearance. The man then decided to seek scientific help to clarify the issue, as he was aware that people did not have any facial problems.

The case was published last week by the magazine The Lancet. According to the data analyzed by scientists, he was diagnosed with prosopometamorphopsia (PMO), known as “demon face syndrome”, neurological disorder extremely rare, which can be confused with schizophrenia.

Generally, the study points out, it can cause distortions all the time, both on people’s faces and on screens or paper, making it difficult for patients to identify the distortion as something that is not real.

The material published by The Lancet pointed out that the man has no general abnormalities of cognitive function and no problems with vision. Until then, no laboratory analysis had been carried out on the North American’s condition.

The patient, identified by The Times like Victor Sharrah, he has a history of bipolar affective disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. In addition, he suffered a head injury at the age of 43, requiring hospitalization, and also possible carbon monoxide poisoning at the age of 55.

“Our report is especially interesting because […] we can be sure that the distortions in his visualizations accurately reflect what he experiences,” said Dartmouth professor Brad Duchaine, co-author of the new study.
