The measures adopted in schools encourage students to actively participate in the campaign to combat Aedes aegypti, both in their homes and in the school environment

Maintaining a healthy environment for students in the state education network is a fundamental priority of the Government of Sergipe for all 319 schools present in Sergipe. Because of this, the State Secretariat for Education and Culture (Seduc), based on the guidelines established and developed in the Federal Government’s national plan for the School Health Program (PSE), has promoted actions in the network’s institutions to encourage students, teachers and managers to face and combat the proliferation of the mosquito that causes diseases such as dengue, zika and chikungunya, Aedes aegypti, whether in the school community or in their region.

The PSE is collaborating jointly with Seduc to strategize effective measures to combat transmitting insects. Initiatives implemented in educational institutions are motivating young people to get involved in the fight against mosquitoes, both in their homes and in schools.

One of the institutions that promote actions to combat the dengue mosquito is the Escola Estadual Professora Maria de Lourdes Siqueira Leite, located in Simão Dias, in the center-south of Sergipe (DRE 2). The school coordinator, Tamires Pereira, praised the work carried out by the students, who produced pamphlets, posters and videos to be presented to the school and general community, in addition to making a commitment to take this information to their families.

“Working on health-related topics is part of our experiences, especially because we consider our students to be transformative agents in society. As an agent, he needs to be informed, and as dengue is a case that affects our society today, we work on the topic in classes, in all subjects. This means that our students can take information to their homes and communities about this disease that has caused so many victims in our locality and in the country”, highlighted Tamires.

Another educational institution that has carried out work with its students is the Marinalva Alves State School, in the municipality of Nossa Senhora do Socorro, in Greater Aracaju (DRE 8). Carina Heloísa shared the proactive measures adopted by the institution to combat the spread of viruses among students and emphasized the importance of actions in the classroom, where students are creating informative posters and sharing them with their families. Furthermore, she highlighted the collaboration of students and their families in producing videos for dissemination on social media.

“We have been carrying out actions in the classroom, also producing posters and distributing them throughout the community here in the neighborhood. Due to the dengue issue, many students may end up missing classes, and we want to prevent this. We are even planning a walk through the community to alert the population about the dangers of dengue here in the region”, concluded the director.

School Health Program

The School Health Program is an initiative of the Federal Government, intersectoral between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education, established on December 5, 2007. It works as a strategy of the Unified Health System (SUS) to achieve health goals involving the target audience of educational age (children and teenagers).

The PSE has a strategic approach that seeks to articulate the health teams of the Unified Health System (SUS) and the education teams of the public basic education network, aiming to expand the reach and impact of actions for students, families and communities. The PSE’s mission is also to contribute to the comprehensive training of students through promotion, prevention and health care actions, aiming to address vulnerabilities that hinder the full development of children and young people in the public education network.
