Health Week in Brazil: what is it? See how it works!

Do you know “Health Week”? In Brazil, this is an initiative created to promote awareness and also carry out health-related actions between April 2nd and 7th. This way, the week ends right at the World Health Day.

This period was officially established by MS Consolidation Ordinance No. 1/2017, art. 527, in a chapter focused only on commemorative dates related to health, which included the Health Week in Brazil.

During these days, the idea is to deepen the population’s understanding of health, going far beyond the absence of diseases, but encompassing physical, mental and social well-being, as established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1946.

What is Health Week and why was it established?

Health Week in Brazil was created with the purpose of increase awareness about the importance of a healthy life It is encourage practices that contribute to physical, mental and social well-being.

This period reflects an expanded understanding of health that is not limited to the absence of illness, but encompasses a state of complete well-beingas defined by the WHO.

Health promotion is seen as a valuable resource for life and for each individual to be able to fully pursue their daily lives. Therefore, implying shared responsibility between different sectors of society, not restricted to just the health sector.

During this week, several commemorative dates are remembered, highlighting the relationship between health, physical activity, and quality of life. The initiative is a response to the challenges posed by chronic non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, which are responsible for a significant portion of global deaths.

The WHO indicates physical activity as the main part of the strategy to combat these diseases, launching a global action plan to reduce physical inactivity among adults and adolescents by 2030.

Therefore, it is essential that everyone understands how to do their part, being aware of how to take care of their health in general, And, especially, having resources and opportunities to do so.
