Lime, ginger, honey and cloves are the ingredients of a juice shared in a video on the recently created social network Threads that, supposedly, “lose weight until your pants fall off”.

The author emphasizes that the video is aimed at those who “need to lose a lot of weight” and explains how to make the recipe. First of all, he says, it is necessary to add “three cloves”, “a glass of water”, “four slices of ginger”, “one lemon” (the name for lime in Brazilian Portuguese) and “one spoon of honey.” Then, continue, you must beat everything and drink the mixture without straining before. But will this juice be effective?

Is it true that drinking lime, ginger, honey and clove juice makes you lose weight?

Speaking to Viral, Leandro Oliveira, nutritionist and researcher at the Center for Research in Biosciences and Health Technologies (CBIOS) from the Lusófona University, adds that there is no scientific basis for the claims shared in the publication about this lime, ginger, honey and clove juice.

There is no scientific evidence that supports the fact that these ingredients – whether isolated or in juice form – have these effects on weight loss and weight loss”, says the nutritionist who is also an assistant professor at the Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde de Coimbra.

The researcher explains that, in fact, some studies suggest that ginger – one of the ingredients in this recipe – may have a thermogenic effect (elevating body temperature and consequently increasing energy expenditure).

However, the nutritionist emphasizes, these studies have several limitations and are, as a general rule, made with ginger extracts or capsules, in doses much higher than those used in this juice. Soon, can’t wait that the results are the same.

Furthermore, it states that the results of different studies are “disparate”and many were carried out on animals or cells, making it impossible to “extrapolate” the results and assume that the effects on humans would be the same.

“Just because in a study with animals or cells it results doesn’t mean that, then, when it comes to human nutrition, the results are the same”, he reinforces.

In systematic review of 109 controlled clinical trials about the different potential health benefits of ginger, the researchers point out that there are some limitations in the studies analyzed, such as the variable quality of trials, inconsistent evaluation systems and the generally small sample size studied.

The authors indicate, for example, that “the thermogenic function of ginger was examined in three randomized crossover trials, and just one study observed the expected result.”

On another level, Leandro Oliveira finds it strange to use honey in a supposedly weight-loss juice, as this ingredient has naturally present sugars and some calories (a dessert spoon of honey will have around 45 calories).

The nutritionist consulted by Viral also remembers that “no food or drinkin itself, leads to weight loss.”

To lose weight, points out Leandro Oliveira, It is necessary to be in a “calorie deficit”, that is, consuming fewer calories than you burn. And this, he argues, must be achieved through “a healthy eating combined with the practice of physical exercise”.

Finally, the nutritionist warns that frequent intake of this lime, ginger, honey and clove juice may have some risks, especially for “people who have gastritis or gastric ulcers”. This is because, “as it is an acidic juice, it can eventually worsen these situations”.
