Dengue: Health Department confirms death of five-month-old baby in Montes Claros | Grande Minas

The Montes Claros Health Department confirmed the death of a five-month-old baby due to dengue fever. This is the second death recorded in the municipality.

According to information from the secretariat, this is a boy, whose symptoms began on March 18th, was hospitalized on the 22nd of the same month and died the following day. The child, who had no comorbidities, had a fever, spots on the body, prostration and reduced appetite. This death does not yet appear in the state survey.

This year, 472 hospitalizations due to arboviruses were carried out, 371 people from Montes Claros and 101 from other cities.

In the document, the City Hall recognizes that the municipality is experiencing an alarming scenario and an outbreak of diseases transmitted by Aedes aegypti, with an “exponential growth in the number of cases and notifications.”

The decree authorizes the “adoption of all administrative and assistance measures necessary to contain the outbreak, in particular public acquisition of inputs and materials, and the hiring of human resources and services strictly necessary to respond to the emergency situation”.

The municipality highlighted that the Department of Urban Services is authorized to extend public cleaning activities, including in vacant lots, public or private, in cases where the lack of cleaning is putting sanitary control at risk.

The Rapid Index Survey for Aedes aegypti (LIRAa) showed an infestation of 8.3% in Montes Claros. This means that for every 100 places visited, more than eight had mosquito outbreaks, which are responsible for transmitting dengue, zika and chikungunya. The previous LIRAa had been at 5.96%.

The first survey of the year was carried out between the 15th and 24th of January and places the municipality in a situation of high risk of mosquito infestation, considering the parameters of the Ministry of Health, in which the measurement is considered satisfactory when it is below 1%; alert situation when it is in the range between 1% and 3.9%; and indicates risk of outbreak when it is equal to or greater than 4%.

The places where Aedes aegypti breeding sites were found most frequently were:

• Mobile storage: vases with aquatic plants, bottles with water, plant support plates, refrigerator defrosting containers, animal drinking fountains, air conditioning tanks: 47.6%
• Fixed deposits: masonry tanks, construction deposits, swimming pools, disused toilets, passage boxes, drains, channels and architectural pieces: 19.2%.
• Ground-level deposits: Water storage for domestic consumption (barrel, tub, barrel, drum, clay deposit, tank, well, cistern, well, etc.): 17.7%.
