João Pessoa City Hall, through the Municipal Health Department (SMS), continues to carry out search actions for outbreaks of the Aedes aegypti mosquito in various parts of the city. This Tuesday (23), Environmental and Zoonoses Surveillance carried out an inspection in the area of the Hotel Tambaú, located on the edge of the Capital and currently deactivated. The objective is to prevent the proliferation of mosquitoes that transmit arboviruses such as dengue, Zika and Chikungunya.

During the action, agents to combat endemic diseases carried out a sweep of the entire location where the hotel operated, as well as the surrounding areas, applying larvicides and using backpack pumps to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.

According to the Environmental Surveillance and Zoonoses Management, the hotel’s old facilities were clean, but some outbreaks of Aedes aegypti were found, located in the building’s roof area, which were immediately eliminated.

The Executive Secretary of Health of the Capital, Janine Lucena, highlighted the importance of the population collaborating with the work routinely carried out by the Environmental Surveillance and Zoonoses teams. “Endemic disease agents make constant visits to homes and commercial establishments to provide guidance and combat arboviruses, but it is essential that citizens also do their part, taking the necessary precautions to prevent the proliferation of Aedes aegypti,” she stated.

The work carried out at Hotel Tambaú is part of the Environmental and Zoonosis Surveillance activities program, which carries out inspections to combat dengue outbreaks in areas considered at risk to become possible mosquito breeding sites, such as the Mechanical District, cemeteries, tire repair shops, recycling, parks and public places.

Data – The Municipal Health Department (SMS) recorded 4,736 reported cases of arboviruses in João Pessoa from January to April 22 of this year. Of the total, 4,399 correspond to suspected cases of dengue, 300 suspected cases of Chikungunya and 37 suspected cases of Zika.

Complaints – So that the population can report possible outbreaks of the disease-transmitting agent, SMS provides two service channels. The report can be made through Disk Dengue, which answers the number 3213-7781 and operates from Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 12 pm and from 1 pm to 4:30 pm.

The population can also report it via WhatsApp ‘Xô, Aedes’, where it is also possible to ask questions about prevention, symptoms and places of care. Opening hours are Monday to Friday, from 8am to 4:30pm, and on Saturdays from 8am to 11:30am, by dialing (83) 98825-0549.

Prevention – Potential breeding sites for the Aedes aegypti mosquito can be eliminated with simple actions such as placing screens on doors and windows; properly dispose of disused objects, leaving the yard always clean; remove water from plant dishes, place empty bottles upside down; cover barrels, water tanks, water tanks and any type of container that can store clean water.
