The Hospital da Criança de Brasília José Alencar (HCB) participates until Saturday (27) in the 4th Brazilian Congress of Urgency and Emergencies, organized by the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP). The event program features several HCB experts speaking on topics such as acute bronchiolitis, metabolic crisis and patients with sickle cell disease in the emergency room.

According to the president of the congress, Vilany Félix, the event brings participants the search for humanized care in pediatrics. “We must change the concept of delivering value focused on illness to delivering value focused on the well-being of our children. We want our professionals to be people of soul. By contributing knowledge, we will make it possible to generate a greater impact on a healthcare institution in the world of patient 4.0 that we have today”, said Félix. She also advised doctors and students present at the congress: “Seek new solutions to old dilemmas, focusing on results for the client and minimizing costs for the system”.

HCB has more than 20 professionals in the congress program. “Urgency and emergency extend to all specialties, as they all have specificities in urgency. The participation of specialists is important to alert the general pediatrician, who is at the forefront, to think about diagnoses that can make a difference in the child’s survival”, says the Hospital’s clinical director, Elisa de Carvalho.

The president of the Pediatrics Society of the Federal District (SPDF), Luciana Monte, is also a pulmonologist at the Hospital da Criança de Brasília and states that participation in the congress shows that HCB “is a protagonist not only in assistance, but also in continuing education, in professional training, updates and research”.

According to her, the congress program goes beyond assistance in cases of urgency and emergency, also focusing on science, management and health education. “We know that diagnostic assertiveness, systematization of care, humanization, clear communication and teamwork are crucial for us to have better chances of success – and our success means life, harm reduction. Events like this result in good clinical practices, benefiting health professionals and also children and the population in general”, says Monte.

HCB’s infectious disease coordinator, Bruno Lima, is one of the Hospital’s specialists participating in the event. “We are going to talk about meningococcal disease, spotted fever, toxic shock, infections that are not so common, but that reach hospitals, so it is important to share this knowledge”, says the doctor, whose talk brings up “important epidemiological questions about the impact that covid- 19 had in pediatrics and post-covid, with what we are experiencing now, with the resurgence of some bacterial infections”.

In addition to lectures, HCB offered practical workshops focused on emergency care for critically ill patients. Through realistic simulation, participants were able to practice cardiopulmonary resuscitation, orotracheal intubation and clinical simulations of cases such as meningitis and sepsis. “These are skills that are not so routine for pediatricians on a daily basis, but they need to be developed continuously”, explains the coordinator of the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Selma Kawahara.

Doctor Roberto Silva, who works in general pediatrics at Hospital São Lucas (Juína, Mato Grosso), participated in the simulation: “The workshop was great, this is an issue that we always need to review; I think that recycling knowledge is essential for every doctor.”

Myrella Turbano, medical student at the Centro de Ensino Superior do Vale Parnaíba (Teresina, Piauí), liked the methodology adopted. “Simulation is interesting because it brings us closer to the patient. Of course, it is not possible to be sure what it will be like with the child, per se, but we are now closer to the reality of care”, she praises.
