One vaccine experimental messenger RNA (mRNA) technology was designed to prevent recurrence of melanoma skin cancer and began to be tested on humans. Among the first participants in the study is British musician Steve Young, 52, who previously had stage II melanoma. The information is from the newspaper The globe.

“As soon as they mentioned this mRNA technology that was being used to potentially fight cancer, I thought, ‘That sounds fascinating’ and I still feel the same way. I’m very, very excited. This is my best chance to stop cancer,” Young highlighted. .

He joins more than a thousand people around the world who are part of the voluntary group of the study, which is in phase 3 and presents encouraging results. immunizer called mRNA-4157 or V940.

The vaccine was designed to be administered in conjunction with the medicine Keytruda (pembrolizumab). In the study, volunteers will receive the medicine, but they and doctors will not know who received the real dose or placebo.

Previous results showed that the combination with the drug led to a 44% reduction in cancer recurrence or death 18 months after surgical removal of melanoma.

University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is leading the final phase of therapy testing. The vaccine is the result of a collaboration between the pharmaceutical companies Moderna and MSD.

The expectation of scientists is that the vaccine can also be used to prevent lung, bladder and kidney cancer.

Messenger RNA technology

mRNA model vaccines work by providing instructions to cells so they can work on production of specific proteinsas was the case in some cases against Covid-19.

With mRNA-4157, the body is induced to react to up to 34 different proteins found only in cancer cells, called neoantigens.

In this way, the patient’s immune system is primed against proteins that are known to play a role in their specific cancer, while Keytruda addresses another of the defenses, resulting in a two-pronged approach.
