Introduction

Understanding vaccination schedules in patients with chronic diseases, such as chronic kidney disease (CKD), chronic liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is critical to ensuring optimal protection against vaccine-preventable diseases. Vaccination plays an important role in reducing transmission and severity of infections in this patient population. The Brazilian Society of Immunizations (SBIm) reinforces that this is a subject of great complexity, with different recommendations between the different protocols, which requires constant updating and incorporation of new knowledge. [1]

For example, in patients with chronic liver disease, adherence to hepatitis A and B vaccination schedules is essential to avoid superinfection and associated complications. Likewise, individuals with CKD benefit from vaccination against various diseases, such as hepatitis B, seasonal influenza, pneumonia, herpes zoster, tetanus and Covid-19, highlighting the importance of knowing and following the schedules vaccination recommended by the National Immunization Program (PNI) and SBIm. [2]

Vaccine acceptance among individuals with chronic illnesses is influenced by concerns about vaccine safety, emphasizing the need for targeted educational efforts to improve vaccination coverage. Studies have indicated that patients recognize the personal and social benefits of vaccines, highlighting the importance of publicizing vaccination schedules for this patient population. [3]
