The Regional Health Superintendence (SRS) of Coronel Fabriciano held, on Thursday, 25/4, the training “Strengthening Prevention and Combating Rabies”. The action aimed to prepare zoonosis professionals for the 2024 Anti-Rabies Campaign, which will be held between July 1st and September 30th.

According to Ana Flávia, Technical Reference of the National Rabies Prophylaxis Program (PNPR), of Coronel Fabriciano’s SRS, rabies is a serious acute viral infectious disease, caused by the virus of the Lyssavirus genus, of the Rhabdoviridae family, which affects mammals, including the man, and is characterized as a progressive and acute encephalitis with a lethality rate of approximately 100%. Public awareness is extremely important for public health, as it is a disease that can be eliminated in its urban cycle (transmitted by dogs and cats) and due to the existence of efficient prevention measures, such as human and animal vaccination, the availability of serum human anti-rabies, carrying out focus blocks, among others.

The training covered topics such as the concept of rabies, prognosis, forms of transmission, epidemiological cycles, incubation period, transmissibility, symptoms, disease evolution, transport of immunobiologicals, packaging and good practices in the field, including animals to be vaccinated, containment and vaccination technique.

The Coronel Fabriciano Regional Health Superintendence works together with the municipalities in the area covered to contribute to the campaign. The action involves strategic planning, training of professionals and provision of vaccines, syringes and needles. Ana Flávia reported that the expectation is that the training of professionals will boost the 2024 Anti-Rabies Campaign. “Vaccination is essential to prevent rabies in animals and humans, and this campaign is an opportunity to raise awareness among the population about the importance of this measure”, noted the technical reference.
