Mato Grosso do Sul managed to slow the spread of dengue cases, according to updated data on the disease released on Tuesday night (30) by the Ministry of Health. The statistic corresponds to the 17th epidemiological week of 2024, between the 21st and 27th. Of april.

Since the beginning of the year, the state has recorded 7,438 confirmed cases of the disease and 15 confirmed deaths. There are also 8,353 probable cases and 12 deaths under investigation. The incidence of dengue in Mato Grosso do Sul, at the moment, is 572.8 cases per group of 100 thousand inhabitants, which places the state in 14th position in the national index.

In addition to Mato Grosso do Sul, 20 other Brazilian states and the Federal District show a downward or stable trend in the incidence of the disease. Ceará, Mato Grosso, Pará, Sergipe and Tocantins are the states that still have an increasing trend in dengue cases.

“This epidemic has a different pattern from the others. What we observed is that there was a very rapid rise in cases and it took eight weeks for it to rise, and we waited a similar time for it to fall. The falling states were the ones that started the rise first, which was explosive”, explained the Secretary of Health and Environmental Surveillance, of the Ministry of Health, Ethel Maciel.

To date, the country has recorded 4.1 million probable cases of the disease, 44,700 of which are serious and an alarm signal. Deaths total 2 thousand.

In the update press conference, the health surveillance secretary also mentioned the inauguration of the Wolbachia Biofactory, in Belo Horizonte (MG). The method consists of releasing Aedes aegypti mosquitoes with the Wolbachia bacteria, which prevents the dengue, Zika and chikungunya viruses from developing in the insect, preventing the transmission of diseases. These mosquitoes, called Wolbitos, are not genetically modified and do not transmit other diseases. The method has been used in Campo Grande since 2019.

“We are taking the Wolbachia method from the research scenario to a level of incorporation as public policy. This action, which has Fiocruz (Fundação Oswaldo Cruz) as the initiating institution, has medium and long-term results, but we already have good results”, explained Ethel.
