Anise. The small ingredient that can have big benefits

AND in a small package that you can easily find in supermarkets with fennel. You can leave it off your shopping list, but you don’t even know the benefits you’re missing out on. In another Food of the Month section, nutritionist Inês Pádua, also a professor at the University Institute of Health Sciences at CESPU (Polytechnic and University Higher Education Cooperative), explains everything.

“Fennel, or anise, as well as other plants in the same family, have very interesting bioactive compounds, including coumarin. Coumarins are a family of secondary metabolites that perform numerous functions”, he reveals to Lifestyle to the Minute.

It is often an ingredient that is in the composition of several medicines “such as expectorants, medicines for digestive problems and diuretics“. Inês Pádua explains that it is also possible to see it in moisturizing creams, for the skin, lotions, ointments and other types of cosmetic products.

Fennel is easy to add to many dishes as a seasoning and can even help you reduce the amount of sugar you use. “As it has an intense and distinctively sweet flavor, it allows reducing the sugar that is used in different preparations such as cakes, cookies and biscuits. For this reason, it is a natural flavor enhancer frequently used in sweets and sweets, liqueurs and infusions.”

It can also bring several benefits to your health since “has gastroprotective effects, particularly in relieving indigestion and bloating and stomach discomfort”. It also has some analgesic and anti-inflammatory benefits.

However, the nutritionist warns of some studies that confirm this. “The caveat must always be made that the studies that allow us to have this knowledge are with extracts and the effects are analyzed, often in vitro or in animals.”

“Although fennel is actually rich from a nutritional point of view, fiber and minerals, above all, the quantities added to most recipes are quite small, and in this sense, are insufficient to achieve all its benefits.”

Likewise, there is also no risk associated with the quantities consumed. “There is no tradition from a dietary point of view of it being consumed in large quantities, so there is also no robust evidence of maximum dose, or safety, of consumption.”

Also pay attention to the use of anise oil. “It should always be discussed with your doctor, but we know that, in excess, fennel oil can cause skin, respiratory and gastrointestinal hypersensitivity.”
