The Iranian community in Portugal called a demonstration, for this Friday afternoon, in Lisbon.

Voices that join the thousands of people around the world who have demonstrated against the regime in Iran.

The concentration comes after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was known, after being arrested by the moral police, because she would be using the hijab scarf improperly.

THE Renaissance spoke to one of the protest organizers. Babak says it’s time to end a Muslim dictatorship regime.

The Iranian activist argues that it is necessary to understand with the international community that Iran has a very different culture from that of its political regime.

“We Iranians have a big identity. Iran, the culture of Iran, the language of Iran, the people of Iran and the Islamic government. For example, when I speak to a Portuguese person in Portugal and I say that I am Iranian, the first thing he thinks about is the Islamic State, the Islamic Government of Iran, but our culture is the Persian culture, the language is Persian, it’s all Persian, not Islamic. Our language has neither masculine nor feminine, because it is a cultural thing. But this Islamic government separates everything,” explains Babak.

The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 pm, at Praça do Comércio, in Lisbon, an event that is also being publicized on social media.

The death of Mahsa Amini sparked a wave of protests in several cities in Iran. Clashes between protesters and security forces have already claimed more than 30 lives.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi announced on Thursday an investigation into the death of the young woman detained by police for incorrectly wearing a veil, which has sparked protests in Iran, but denounced the “hypocrisy of Western powers”.
