The mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira, declared that he will vote for the Democratic Alliance in the legislative elections on the 10th and stressed “that being independent is not being neutral”.
“My dear Luis [Montenegro], we are not afraid, the country will not vote out of fear. I, for my part, have already made my choice: I’m going to vote AD, I hope you vote AD and that on the 10th I can call you to congratulate you”, said Rui Moreira, at a lunch-rally in Trofa (Porto district) for around 2,000 people, according to the organization.
The mayor said that he had already conveyed this position of support to the president of the PSD, Luís Montenegro, “since day one”, and that he was now sharing it publicly.
Moreira justified his support for AD both by Montenegro’s human and political qualities and by the coalition’s economic project, arguing that “it is necessary to create more wealth to combat poverty”.
“AD’s goals are possible, it is possible to grow, create more income (…). Don’t forbid us to dream, don’t try to scare us”, he asked, saying that in the 80s of the last century the country had growth of 6 %, who considered that they could become possible again if the State “is not permanently holding the reins”.
The mayor, re-elected as an independent in 2021 with the support of the CDS-PP and IL and other small parties, asked the president of the PSD for a favor, if he becomes prime minister.
“It’s about getting rid of the complicometer, we need to get rid of the complicometer”, he appealed, in a request to which Montenegro nodded, in agreement.
Rui Moreira had already been present at the signing of the AD coalition, between PSD, CDS-PP and PPM, at the beginning of January, but then refused to believe that this meant support.
