There is no news today – Terra Ruiva in solidarity with the General Strike of Journalists

The Journalists’ Union has called for a General Strike for today, March 14th, the first in more than 40 years.

Issues such as low wages, job insecurity and other remuneration and employment issues are at stake, but also much more than that.

Journalism in Portugal, and beyond, is going through difficult days, when its survival is at stake, despite being one of the fundamental pillars for the construction and development of democracy.

The proliferation of social networks, the flight of advertising to these same networks, the almost non-existence of institutional support for the media have made the exercise of the profession increasingly difficult and in many municipalities in the country newspapers have disappeared or are about to disappear. and local radio.

In addition, the profession of journalist is identified as one of the most demanding and subject to multiple pressures, which is why, unsurprisingly, it is one of those that records the highest rate of burnout among its professionals.

At Terra Ruiva we also feel many of these constraints on the profession and the difficulties faced by the press, particularly the regional press, which, in the short term, will not be able to survive without another support policy.

For these reasons we are in solidarity with the strike called by the Journalists Union and there will be no news today.

Because we believe that without newspapers and journalists the world is poorer.
