The president of the Union of Parishes of Marrazes and Barosa, Paulo Clemente, announced today his candidacy for president of the Leiria District Federation of the Socialist Party.

In a press release, the mayor states that, “following the electoral results of the last legislative elections, and given the threat resulting from the disproportionate growth of populism, it is imperative, once and for all, to change the paradigm” to “save democracy “.

Paulo Clemente assumes that his candidacy is “truly new, without defects, without combined schemes and without negotiations to allocate places and in permanent dialogue with everyone”.

“A candidacy whose motto is For Competence” and which “focuses on a new perspective and a new look from those who intend to contribute to the well-being of everyone, putting people and the country first”.

According to Paulo Clemente, “Portugal is not a country of fascists, it is, rather, a country of people dissatisfied with the current political situation, demonstrated by the results of the last elections”.

“It is imperative to strengthen democracy and political action with the aim of serving the country based on the common good of all, where there is room for opinion and where we are all responsible for building a fairer, more balanced country more aware of its size and potential”, Paulo Clemente also states in the press release.

For the mayor, this is not the time to continue “pointing the finger at the mistakes of the past”, but rather, “it is time to learn from mistakes, correct those that still persist and think about the future of current and future generations”.

The Leiria District Federation of the PS is currently led by Walter Chicharro, president of the Chamber of Nazaré, who was elected deputy to the Assembly of the Republic by the Leiria circle.

In the district of Leiria, the PS obtained 22.50% of the votes in the last legislative elections, electing three deputies, behind the Democratic Alliance, which won 35.21% of the votes and five mandates.

Chega was the third most voted political force, gathering 19.66% of the votes, electing two mandates.
