Tourist couple has been missing since Saturday in Madeira

The PSP and PJ are investigating the disappearance of a french tourist couple on the north coast of the island of Madeira, with a search operation underway by land and sea since Saturday, a police source said this Monday.

The tourists, a man and a woman of French nationality, aged 58 and 56, were last seen in the area of Calhau sitein the municipality of Saint Vincentnorth coast of the island, where they were staying.

According to the PSP, the alert was given on Saturday afternoon by the couple’s daughter, who that day chose to rest in the accommodation, while her parents decided to go for a walk nearby.

The police report that a witness at the scene indicated that he saw the tourists walking on Avenida Marcos Marques Rosa, in the direction of Porto Moniz, a municipality adjacent to São Vicente, on the north coast, at 3:45 pm on Saturday, according to Jornal da Madeira.

The 58-year-old man is 1.80m tall and was wearing a gray jacket and blue tracksuit bottoms. The woman, aged 56, measures 1.69m, was wearing a blue sports coat and had a pink backpack, warns the PSP in a statement.

The last location recorded on the cell phone of one of the couple’s members was at Véu da Noiva, on the way to Seixal, one of the couple’s daughter’s friends told Correio da Manhã this Monday. However, the search teams acted on the opposite side, in the direction of Ponta Delgada. The couple’s cell phones are not connected.

There are no concrete clues

“We don’t have a concrete clue that tells us where the tourists went,” explained the source from the Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) of Madeira, which coordinates the operation that already operates in the form of searches by land, sea and air.

The search operation began on Saturday and was resumed on Sunday, using the PSP Search, Rescue, Relief and Mountain Rescue brigade, the Forestry Police and Sanas, having been interrupted at 7:00 pm.

“We resumed the search this morning and We don’t have anything concrete.”reinforced the PSP this Monday, adding that the Judiciary Police was associated with the operation.

Also involved in the operation are the Judiciary Police (PJ), the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Madeira Operational Command, the Regional Civil Protection Service, the Maritime Authority and Sanas – Madeiran Association for Relief at Sea.

The Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police asked the population, if they see the couple or have any relevant information, to contact the Porto Moniz PSP Police Station, via telephone number 291 853 361.
