It is a contribution to so-called clean energy. EDP’s largest solar plant in Europe was inaugurated this Monday. It is a giant park that extends across the municipalities of Alenquer and Azambuja.

There are more than 310 thousand panels with an installed capacity of 202 Megawatts. The Cerca photovoltaic plant is EDP Renováveis’ largest solar project in Europe.

This is the first to be inaugurated in a batch of higher power solar plants that were awarded in the 2019 public auction.

Located in the municipalities of Alenquer and Azambuja, in Lisbon, the plant is capable of directly supplying 100,000 families.

“It’s approximately 1% of Portugal’s energy consumption. If we had five of these parks, we could provide energy to the whole of Portugal”, says Duarte Bello, administrator of EDP Renováveis.

The equipment installed is of the latest generation.

200 hectares is the size of this photovoltaic park. It is a relevant investment for the country’s energy transition, but its magnitude has an impact on this landscape.

EDP Renováveis does not reveal the cost of this infrastructure. It just says that it is included in an estimated annual investment of 3 billion euros in the production of green energy.
