UA total of 129 restaurants located in the 15 municipalities of the Portalegre district participate in the third edition of the Terras do Borrego Gastronomic Fortnight, which starts this Sunday, the organization announced this Monday.

The gastronomic initiative, promoted by the Municipal Council of Sousel (Portalegre), within the scope of the “Sousel, Capital do Borrego” project, will run until April 7th.

Pedro Alcaide, spokesperson for the event, explained today to the Lusa agency that the event has been embracing more restaurants, year after year. In the first edition, in 2022, “it was just over 100 restaurants”, but, last year, there were already “120” participating restaurants, increasing that number to 129 establishments, in the 2024 edition, he stated.

Chef Jorge Peças, born in the municipality of Sousel and who runs the kitchen at the Convento do Espinheiro hotel, in Évora, is once again the “ambassador” of this initiative, which aims to “unite all the municipalities” in that region around a of its endogenous products.

The Sousel Chamber informed that, in parallel, the town of Sousel will host the 1st edition of the Terras do Borrego Festival, starting this Wednesday and until April 1st, in the multipurpose pavilion, to “continue the affirmation” of the brand “Sousel, Capital do Borrego”.

In addition to the gastronomic component, this festival will host conferences, an area of ​​endogenous products and “a more playful side”, with musical shows, Pedro Alcaide told Lusa. The “Sousel, Capital of Lamb” project is based on the historical and economic importance of sheep cattle in that Alentejo municipality, whose quality is recognized through the Protected Geographical Indication of Lamb in the Northeast of Alentejo.

In addition to this recognition, the municipality recalled that the municipality is home to the “main national lamb meat farm”, and is also the “largest in Europe” with animal welfare certification, as well as “around a hundred” small producers .

During the Terras do Borrego Gastronomic Fortnight, dishes made from the meat of this animal will be ‘kings and lords’ on the menus of the 129 participating restaurants. Traditional lamb stew, fried and grilled chops or roast lamb are some of the ‘delicacies’ that can be tasted in restaurants in the Portalegre district.
