A prison guard at Coimbra prison was this Monday attacked with punches to the head by an inmate described as violent, with the guard being admitted to the city hospital awaiting tests, a union source told Lusa.

According to the leader of the National Union of the Prison Guard Corps (SNCGP) Frederico Morais, the guard was attacked in the head with punches and was admitted to the Hospital and University Center of Coimbra for medical examinations.

Another prison source heard by Lusa reported that the prison guard had several bruises and marks on his face resulting from the attacks, which reportedly took place at around 3:00 pm.

The attacker is 35 years old and is serving a sentence for crimes of harm to physical integrity, domestic violence, among others, and is described as violent, with Frederico Morais mentioning that he has already been transferred to the Monsanto prison establishment once, high security, after attacks also on prison guards.

According to Frederico Morais, the blows were not specifically aimed at the attacked guard, since at that moment “one or another could have been attacked”, only the one who was in the post when the inmate had the violent behavior.

The prison source interviewed by Lusa said that during the morning the same inmate had been involved “in a skirmish with another companion of his”.

For the union leader, this case is the last of 11 registered since January this year and another one that highlights the “lack of security in prisons”, especially with regard to “gratuitous attacks” on prison guards, which is why the The union demands that “more serious measures be taken, that is, the amendment of the Criminal Procedure Code”, to protect prison guards, who “represent the Portuguese State”.

Frederico Morais also said that if nothing is done, the situation could become “more serious”.
