Impressive speed and projected victims: Shocked neighbors report hit-and-run that killed Portuguese woman in the USA – World

The community of São Francisco continues to be in shock after the violent accident that killed a Portuguese woman, her husband and one of the couple’s children, on Saturday.

The tributes to the three victims multiplied and a memorial was even created to honor Matilde, aged 40, Diego, aged 38 and Joaquin, about a year old.

In addition to the moving speeches in memory of the family, there are several shocking and impressive accounts of the tragic accident that has already led to the arrest of an elderly woman.

“How can a car go so fast and destroy the entire bus stop”, said Johanna Dimayuga, a neighbor who witnessed the event.

Witnesses reported that the car was traveling at around 90 kilometers per hour, and in the wrong direction. There were no tire marks on the ground.

The neighbor confessed that it was “heartbreaking” to see that scene and that she was still in shock. “It’s very hard to unsee what we saw. I’m still shaking,” she shared.

Following the news of the death, several people went to the scene to pay tribute to the victims. The only survivor was another son of the couple, just a few months old.

“I can’t erase the carnage I saw from my memory,” Johanna added.

According to reports, the father was thrown more than 20 meters and died at the scene. The mother and the baby, who ended up dying, were taken to the hospital still alive.

“The baby’s stroller was destroyed,” explained another neighbor, who stated that Joaquin was inside the stroller when he was hit.

The baby, around one year old, was projected more than 18 meters. A memorial was created at this location.

“You just want to hug your children a lot and be grateful for every moment you have with others,” said neighbor Michelle McCauley, quoted by CBS News. The woman took her husband and children to the memorial.

A group of pedestrian advocates in San Francisco made another memorial, at the bus stop, with a white baby stroller and three pairs of shoes – one for each victim.

People were encouraged by the group to take flowers, stuffed animals and toys to the bus stop where the accident occurred.

A vigil was also held on Monday.

Local prosecutor calls for calm

Brook Jenkins, San Francisco prosecutor, asks people to remain calm and trust the work of investigators.

“Although I understand that there is an immediate desire to know what will happen in this case, I ask everyone for a lot of patience, while investigators continue to look for more information, so that we can make correct decisions.”

“The cars must be analyzed in detail to understand whether any mechanical problem had an impact on the accident”, he concluded.

At the hospital, where she was taken after the accident, the 78-year-old woman reacted in a statement to what had happened.

The message signed by the detainee’s lawyer reveals that she is cooperating with the authorities, and asks that her privacy be respected.
