The construction of a hotel for insects in the Bosque Empresarial da Pedrulha marked World Tree and Forest Day, yesterday, as part of the project “Planting oxygen – less cement, more biodiversity” of the Municipality of Mealhada. Throughout the week, the focus was also on water, with the Environmental Interpretation Center promoting various activities for the youngest children.
The new hotel for insects created in the Bosque Empresarial da Pedrulha complemented its plantation, on Autochthonous Forest Day, on November 23, with the participation of students, businesspeople and workers from industrial areas. Several indigenous species were planted, from stone pines to cork oaks, from cherry trees to laurel trees, from leafy trees to hawthorn trees, with the aim of creating leisure areas in industrial areas. This year, in the construction of the hotel, various materials from nature were used and the roof has centuries-old tiles made from the old Devesas ceramics, from Pampilhosa, representing a tribute to an industrial hub that had a strong importance in the municipality of Mealhada.
Throughout the week, there were several initiatives dedicated to water, in collaboration with Águas do Centro Litoral, and to the forest, developed by the Environmental Interpretation Center, the Forestry Technical Office and the Green Spaces Sector. Gymkhanas, walks dedicated to the interpretation of biodiversity, actions to maintain trees and shrubs near schools, the construction of shelter boxes for passerines, hotels for insects, feeders for birds and various workshops were some of the proposals developed with the youth population and with the community.
The Plantar oxygen – less cement, more biodiversity” project is part of the Mayors’ pact for Climate and Energy, which aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 40% by 2030.
