From beaches to mountains, from wineries to historic cities, from surfing to rich cuisine, a trip to Portugal embraces the most diverse travelers – and is capable of creating unforgettable memories. To celebrate its 90 years of history, Tivoli Hotels & Resorts launches a tailor-made itinerary, which passes through some of the most symbolic points in the country, from the capital Lisbon to the beaches of the Algarve, known for its transparent waters.

The journey involves accommodation in some of the chain’s 15 five-star hotels, designed to combine luxurious service with the authentic traditions and flavors of each region. Pastel de nata, toucinho do Céu, craft beers, Quinta dos Santos wines and duck rice are just some of them.

The itinerary starts at Tivoli Avenida Liberdade – the first of the brand, opened in 1933 –, continues to Tivoli Carvoeiro and ends at Tivoli Marina Vilamoura, in Algarve. The journey began with a stay at the Tivoli Avenida Liberdade, one of the most luxurious addresses in the city. Inspired by the Champs-Élysées, in Paris, the Portuguese route also includes some of the most important international fashion brands.

The first stop of Marie Claire it was the Anantara Spa. The massage with essential oils is perfect for stimulating circulation and recovering energy after the flight. The urban spa’s portfolio also includes holistic treatments, which combine ancestral therapies from Asia with Portuguese rituals, such as exfoliation with Dead Sea salt crystals, grape seeds and rice powder. There are also treatments especially for the face, with natural products from the French brand Biologique Recherche.

In the suite, traditional Portuguese sweets welcome guests. Arranged on a map, each one represented its region of origin: toucinho do Céu, from Guimarães; bowlada, from Idanha–a-Nova; pastel de nata, from Lisbon; and Dom Rodrigo, from Lagos. All replaced each time you leave the room.

At night, the rooftop of Sky Bar by Seen, one of the trendiest bars in Lisbon (open to the general public, not just guests), is a great choice to try innovative drinks – with emphasis on the reinterpretation of the Moscow mule .

The hotel also has two other restaurants. While Seen, led by chef Olivier da Costa, offers a complete selection of sushi, Cervejaria Liberdade, located inside Tivoli, attracts with its famous combination of seafood and other seafood with traditional Portuguese recipes, paired with some of the wines and renowned beers of Portuguese origin. The menu includes some classic dishes from the country, such as rooster fish fillets, duck rice and octopus à lagareiro.

A tip for traveling there is to explore the hills and narrow streets of Lisbon by tuk-tuk (a popular tricycle in Asian countries). Between one stop and another, it is possible to visit the viewpoints of Senhora do Monte and Portas do Sol, with exuberant views; take a coffee break in Alfama, the city’s oldest neighborhood; and visit points such as the Santa Maria Maior Church, the Júlio de Castilho Garden, known for its sculptures, and Praça do Comércio, on the banks of the Tagus River.

Algarve, resort routine

Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve Resort is just ten minutes from the center of Carvoeiro and the beach. After a wine tasting selected by the sommelier Francisco Meira, it was time for a true gastronomic immersion. First, lunch at the Mare Bistro restaurant, with fresh snacks and light dishes, such as salmon salad.

Then, dinner at The One restaurant, which updates traditional recipes, such as the stew (a roast with fish, seafood, potatoes, tomatoes and caramelized onions), and focuses on seasonal ingredients. The summer menu features dishes such as turbot fish baked in salt and herb batter and seasonal fruit cheesecake served with basil ice cream. The entire hotel kitchen is led by the executive chef Bruno Augusto.

Also in the Algarve region is the Tivoli Marina Vilamoura, the next bus stop Marie Claire. Next to the Vilamoura Marina and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the resort is ideal for those who want to venture into nature: it gives access to tours through the Ria Formosa Natural Park, with a rich biodiversity – especially birds – and natural landscapes .

The hotel also suits those looking for typical cuisine. Craft beers and wines from Quinta dos Santos, produced in the Algarve; craft cocktails at The Argo Cocktail Bar and, to finish, a dinner at Pepper’s Steakhouse Restaurant, focused on premium cuts of meat. Wait for dishes to stay in your memory.
