This Sunday, Sporting won the Portuguese men’s volleyball Cup.

In the final, the team coached by João Coelho beat Fonte Bastardo, in five sets (3-2), at the Viana do Castelo Cultural Center, in a match that lasted around two and a half hours and ended up being decided in an exciting “black match”, won by the green and whites by 22-20.

The lions won the first set 25-16, in what was the most unbalanced part of the entire match.

In the second set, the Azoreans, coached by Nuno Abrantes, responded and tied the final, with a score of 20-25.

Sporting returned to the lead by winning the third set, 25-22, but Fonte Bastardo forced the “black”, by winning the fourth set, by the same numbers as the second: 20-25.

After beating Benfica in the semi-finals, making this the first final without the Reds since 2013/14 (the time when Castêlo da Maia beat Fonte do Bastardo), Sporting ended up winning the title, by win the fifth and decisive set.

In a very balanced match, Sporting ended up winning with the sixth match point they had, winning the decisive partial by 22-20, after failing to close the final 14-13, 15-14, 18-17 , in 19-18 and in 20-19. Fonte Bastardo also had two match points (at 15-16 and 16-17), but failed to reach what would be their second Cup title, after 2013.

This is the fifth Portuguese volleyball Cup won by Sporting, after the victories in 2021, 1995, 1993 and 1991.
