The oldest art biennial in the Iberian Peninsula returns from July 20th to December 30th, 2024 and will invite artists and thinkers to reflect on the theme of freedom.

The results of the competition for the XXIII Cerveira International Art Biennial are now known. In total, 56 works and five interventions by 51 artists from 12 countries will be presented within the scope of the international competition.

Inviting artists to problematize issues associated with the democratic values achieved in the April Revolution of 1974, on which the historical and cultural legacy of the Cerveira International Art Biennial is based, the XXIII BIAC international competition registered 469 applications from 477 artists from 32 countries, in a total of 658 works and interventions.

After selection by the Jury, 56 works and five interventions by 51 artists from 12 countries will be presented to the public: Germany, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, South Korea, Italy, Moldova, Nigeria, Portugal, Turkey.

For the president of FBAC, Rui Teixeira, “this number reveals the recognition and importance of the event in the national and international panorama of Contemporary Art and allows the biennial to continue to assert itself as a place for the presentation of avant-garde artists”.

The analysis of the works was carried out by an invited Selection Jury, composed of: Jose Antonio Castro Muñiz, artist and professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Pontevedra at the University of Vigo; Mafalda Santos, member of the FBAC curatorial and programming team; Marta Almeida, deputy director of the Serralves Museum; Marta Mestre, artistic director of CIAJG and Visual Arts; and Tales Frey, transdisciplinary artist. It should be noted that before voting on the applications began, the members of the Jury presented declarations of conflict of interest and did not participate in the voting on the respective artistic proposals.

The works of the selected competitors will be subject to the Vila Nova de Cerveira City Council Acquisition Awards, totaling 20 thousand euros, and a Revelation Award from the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth (IPDJ).
