The traps will serve to protect European bees and safeguard the local ecosystem, so this measure aims to respond to the growing challenge posed by the spread of the Asian hornet.

This new ecosystem protection measure is being carried out in collaboration with parish councils and the trap installation plan is in tune with the beginning of the activity of this non-indigenous, invasive and predatory species of the European bee.

Rising temperatures cause foundress wasps to emerge from hibernation, posing a threat to biodiversity. The primary objective then becomes to capture them before they form primary nests, thus controlling their proliferation. The traps are properly identified, providing information to the community.

The collaboration between the Municipality of Lamego and the parish councils “reflects a joint effort to protect the natural resources essential for the sustainability of the territory and guarantee the appearance of new nests, highlights the municipality.

Continuous supervision of this measure will be carried out by the Municipal Civil Protection Service (SMPC), allowing a detailed assessment of the areas most critical to the presence of the Asian wasp.

The traps were acquired under the project “GESVESPA DOURO: Integrated management of Vespa velutina in the Douro”, promoted by the Douro Intermunicipal Community (CIMDOURO), co-financed by PO SEUR.

It means continuing to inform despite all the contingencies of confinement, without having stopped for a single day.
