The IPMA warned this Tuesday of the possibility of snow in the highest points of the island of Madeira over the Easter weekend and periods of sometimes intense rain on Thursday and Saturday due to the Nelson depression.
This depression extends from Iceland to the Madeira region, “influencing the weather in the archipelago”, says the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) in a statement released today.
“Therefore, periods of rain or showers are expected to occur, which should be more intense and frequent on Thursday, the 28th, and Saturday, the 30th. There is the possibility of precipitation occurring in the form of snow in the points highest on the island of Madeira in some periods, namely at the end of the 28th, on the 29th, Good Friday and on the 31st, Easter Sunday”, said the IPMA.
Wind is expected “from the moderate to strong western quadrant, with gusts of up to 80 km/hour, and may exceed 100 km/hour in the highlands, especially on the 28th and 30th of March”.
The IPMA also predicts maximum temperatures between 19ºC and 21ºC and minimum temperatures between 13º and 16º, with the exception of the highlands, where they can be below 10º.
On Friday, adds the IPMA, temperatures may fall below these values, especially in the highlands, but they are expected to rise again on Saturday.
“For the state of the sea, strong sea agitation is expected, with northwest waves exceeding four meters on the north coast of the island of Madeira and in Porto Santo on the 26th and 27th, and which should increase to a significant height between five and six meters from the 28th”, says information from IPMA.
A yellow warning for sea unrest is in force for the north coast of the island of Madeira until 09:00 on Wednesday, March 27th, with a similar warning in force for the same period for the coast of the island of Porto Santo.
