CIJ_UA takes place within the scope of the Campus Jazz – UA Jazz Festival and is aimed at ensembles emerging from the jazz scene: boldness and freedom. Applications for this year’s edition run from April 1st to May 9th.

The UA’s 50th anniversary program takes place under the motto “Boldness and Freedom”. Being an “unwritten” and essentially improvised musical genre, as considered by promoter José Duarte, author of the longest-running program on Portuguese radio, donor of his collection to UA, it would be difficult for terms other than “Boldness and Freedom” to apply. better to jazz. Thus, in the year that marks the 50th anniversary of the UA and the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, the Campus Jazz – UA Jazz Festival, as well as the various activities associated with it, will have a special symbolism.

CIJ_UA aims to promote artistic creation within ensembles emerging from the jazz scene in Portugal and foster their relationship with similar events taking place in other countries. In other words, CIJ_UA is intended for jazz ensembles that do not have published albums, made up of Portuguese musicians and/or foreign musicians.

Awards: Best Ensemble, Best Original Composition and Best Original Arrangement

The Competition Jury is made up of musicians of recognized merit in the area and teachers from higher education institutions in which jazz has a curricular expression and will decide on the attribution of three prizes: Best Ensemble, Best Original Composition and Best Original Arrangement. The Jury is chaired by the UA representative, Jorge Castro Ribeiro, professor at the Department of Communication and Art.

The competition consists of two phases: pre-selection test – carried out through the sending of audio recordings; final presentation/public presentations – through an in-person public presentation on a UA stage. At the end of June 6th, once the public presentations of all the ensembles have concluded, the president of the Competition Jury announces the jury’s deliberations and the prizes are awarded.

The Best Ensemble Award consists of a monetary value of 1500 euros (one thousand and five hundred euros) and inclusion in the program of the next edition of Campus Jazz. The Best Original Composition Award consists of a monetary value of 500 euros (five hundred euros). The Best Original Arrangement Award consists of a monetary value of 500 euros (five hundred euros). All winners receive a UA International Jazz Competition Diploma. No prizes are awarded ex aequo.

Jazz promoted online

With the aim of promoting Jazz and the opportunities to promote the new values of Portuguese jazz, the UA has associated itself with other important festivals that will include the winning ensemble of each edition in their programs. Thus, the winner of the Best Ensemble Award has ensured the scheduling of five concerts, one at the Jazz Campus the following year and four more assured by the UA partners in this Competition: Guimarães Jazz, in the same year’s edition, and in the following year’s editions of the festivals “Que jazz é este?”, “Estarrejazz” and also a performance at the Águeda Arts Center, as part of a partnership with the Municipality of Águeda.

The Campus Jazz 2024 program, for example, includes a performance by the Pedro Molina Quarteto, winner of the 2023 edition. The ensemble was part of the Guimarães Jazz 2023 lineup and is part of the 2024 editions of the festivals “Que jazz é este?”, “ Estarrejazz” and at the Águeda Arts Center, as part of a partnership with the Municipality of Águeda.
