The shared bicycle system in the municipality of Benavente – BaGO das Lezírias Ribatejanas, is already running on the municipality’s roads and cycle paths, thus allowing users a sustainable mobility option.
In this first phase, the system has 24 bicycles: 8 electric and 16 for conventional use, distributed across 4 stations, two in Samora Correia and the same number in Benavente.
Carlos Coutinho, Mayor of Benavente, highlighted that the shared bicycle system is included in Benavente’s Strategic Urban Development Plan (PEDU), which also includes the construction of cycle paths and the requalification of urban parks.
The mayor highlighted that the project, in addition to being extended to the remaining parishes of the municipality, will also have to “have more bicycles, more stations, so that someone who wants to travel to school, health center, to commerce, to leisure area, you can take a bicycle, make that journey and dock with another, as happens in Lisbon”, as this is the only way it becomes “an element of mobility”.
Carlos Coutinho emphasizes that thanks to the natural conditions of the municipality, “a plain”, it has “fantastic conditions to be successful”.
Responding now to the criticisms that have been launched over the years, the mayor concludes that the Municipality had “the opportunity to wait for the entire project to be completed to implement them (the bicycles), with the coherence with which they were designed a few years ago .”
