Portugal has more than a thousand denominations of agricultural and horticultural species registered in 2024, with emphasis on tomatoes which have more than 230, it was announced today.

In the 2024 National Variety Catalog (1st version), Portugal has more than 1,000 denominations.

In greater numbers, tomatoes stand out (235), with names such as Benfica, Buda, Centauro, Glitter, Nelson or Zapateco.

This is followed by corn (141, including conservation varieties) and sunflower (116).

Also noteworthy is watermelon (50), with names such as Esmeralda, Esmeraldita and Palmira, as well as melon (49), which includes Capoverde, Marvel, Manuel António and Marco António.

Then peppers (44), annual ryegrass (41), sorghum (36) and onions (30) appear.

With more than 10 denominations, there are also, for example, zucchini (18), lucerne (16), potato (12), perennial ryegrass (13), and chickpeas (12).
