Event brings together shepherds, producers and cheesemakers from the Serra da Estrela region “in an atmosphere of celebration and gastronomic richness”
The Chamber of Gouveia, in the district of Guarda, is promoting this Friday and Saturday (29th and 30th March) the 14th edition of the Cheese Market, an event dedicated to the appreciation and promotion of Serra da Estrela Cheese.
In a statement, the municipality highlights that the event brings together “for two days, shepherds, producers and cheesemakers from the region, in an atmosphere of celebration and gastronomic richness”.
The Cheese Market program includes tasting and selling cheese, ‘showcookings’, workshops, fashion shows and moments of musical entertainment.
According to the program released by the organization, the event opens its doors at 9:45 am this Friday, with a greeting to the city by the Sociedade Recreativa e Musical de Moimenta da Serra.
This is followed by presentations and moments dedicated to gastronomy, such as cheese-making workshops, showcookings, tastings of national DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) cheeses and presentations of innovative projects in the region.
On Friday afternoon, there will be a fashion and accessories show made from 100% wool, which will be accompanied by musical accompaniment from the group “LUA”, from Aurora Pinto, from Gouveense, finalist in the second edition of the television program “The Voice Kids Portugal”.
On Saturday, the Cheese Market reopens at 10 am. For this day, the making of Requeijão de Beatilha (traditional cream cheese from the União de Freguesias de Aldeias and Mangualde da Serra) and a technical tasting of Requeijão da Serra da Estrela, organized by the Confraria Báquica Gastronómica e do Requeijão da Serra da Estrela, are scheduled for this day.
On this day, a protocol will also be signed for gastronomic research and innovation within the scope of Requeijão Serra da Estrela PDO between the Confraria Báquica Gastronómica e do Requeijão da Serra da Estrela and the Instituto de Gouveia – Escola Profissional.
The Cheese Market 2024 program includes activities from various groups and communities in the region and the Folklore Exhibition of the Municipality of Gouveia. The event ends with a pairing of Serra da Estrela PDO cheese with Dão wines, promoted by the Serra da Estrela Cheese Producers Cooperative (Estrelacoop).
The organization of the event, promoted by the Chamber of Gouveia, has the collaboration of the Serra da Estrela Association of Shepherds and Cheese Producers, the Gouveia Institute – Professional School, the Serra da Estrela Rural Development Association, the cultural network Terras Transumância (which Castro Daire is also part of) and EstrelaCoop.
