Portuguese detained in Indonesia: extradition is possible, but “it will be very difficult”

-

Fernando is accused of being the recipient of the drug that Rui Viana, just 21 years old, will have taken from Portugal to Bali in exchange for 6 thousand euros. More than 2.5 kilos of liquid cocaine were found in three shampoo bottles.

This Tuesday, in Indonesian style, they were shown on television, placed behind investigators during a press conference by the narcotics department. The media was taken advantage of by Fernando to denounce what appear to be signs of violence.

Indonesian prisons are known for poor conditions. Extradition of the two men to Portugal is possible, but it is a difficult task. Portuguese courts may also issue an arrest warrant for the two suspects. If the drugs left Portugal, a crime was also committed here, which legitimizes the request that the suspects be transferred to face trial.

“The Public Prosecutor’s Office has the duty to open the case, it has the duty to request extradition. The State, by presenting the extradition request, can, obviously, try to convince Indonesia to try to extradite, within the possibilities of the case. But everything This is difficult”, explained lawyer Vânia Costa Ramos to SIC.

The Judiciary Police have already said that they are attentive and investigating how the drugs arrived in Indonesia and are trying to identify everyone involved.

Fernando and Rui are both accused of drug trafficking and, in Indonesia, risk a sentence of up to 20 years in prison. If they are convicted, they will be able to ask for the sentence to be served in Portugal.

Diplomacy, which operates, silently, behind the scenes, is also a possibility that can influence the withdrawal of Portuguese people, especially from countries where the laws have a heavy hand.

Rui Viana’s family has already asked the embassy for support. The emotional appeal was also made. At 21 years old, the footballer, from Madeira, is about to be a father.
