Three days of learning and rest

The 2024 Spring Days head to the island of Madeira to provide three intensive days of learning, combined with time to rest and enjoy various fun activities.

After last year’s success, in which we crossed the Atlantic Ocean for the first time, in 2024, we will meet colleagues who work in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, thus providing a unique opportunity to access OMD’s in-person training.

The Spring Days have unique characteristics, promoting not only learning, but also socializing, through a social program aimed at all participants (dentists and their families, to whom this invitation is extended).

At a time when society is increasingly aware of the benefits of a healthy balance between work and leisure, these days take on increasing importance by boosting both components in a multidisciplinary program.

On the scientific side, there are three conferences not to be missed: “Oral breathing and pediatric sleep”, by Rita Sousa Tavares, “Vital pulp therapy: minimally invasive endodontics. Protocol”, by Luís Corte-Real, and “Improvement of the perio-prosthetic interface in complex rehabilitation with implants”, by Hélder Moura.

To promote fraternization among participants, speakers and families, the organization is preparing a set of initiatives that will make this event memorable.

Reasons why we extend this invitation. Take part in the Spring Days and take advantage of the Easter period to give your family a mini-holiday on the island, which is among the most stunning destinations in Portugal.

Scientific program

Mouth Breathing and Pediatric Sleep (Rita Sousa Tavares, March 28, 2024)

The way we adapt our breathing has repercussions far beyond those noticed.

Increasingly, as dentists we notice coincidences in the characteristics of the patients who come to our consultations.
In general, there are ‘normal’ family background excuses. Will these characteristics be present in patients when they are born or will they be a set of factors to which they are exposed and which are perpetuated in the same family for generations.

From food, to sleep, to everything we consume and the way we consume them, daily habits and the lack of true guiding threads will be changing our children, their mouth, breathing, chewing and other functions of the stomatoglossognathic system.

It is possible to recover when we stop seeing the tooth and the disease and start looking at the person, whatever their age and condition, it is important that the healthcare professional knows what they are looking for.
Restore health and not just treat the disease.

The main objective of this training is:

  • Highlight breathing patterns;
  • Recognize musculoskeletal changes in the face in mouth breathers;
  • Understand the myofunctional condition of the stomatoglossognathic system;
  • Promote the referral of patients in disorders: sleep, ENT, pediatrics, physiotherapy, osteopathy, myofunctional therapy.

At the end of this training, the trainee will be able to:

  • Recognize techniques and practical guidelines for healthy breathing;
  • Allow establishing interdisciplinary objectives for primary health prevention;
  • Promote health and not just treat disease from birth.

Vital pulp therapy: minimally invasive endodontics. Protocol (Luís Corte-Real, March 29, 2024)

Vital pulp therapy is a minimally invasive approach to cases of pulp exposure whether due to trauma, caries or prosthetic convenience.

The regenerative and reparative capacity of the vital dental pulp is the biological basis of this treatment that aims to keep the pulp-dentin complex healthy, using biomaterials to form a protective barrier and thus prevent bacterial infiltration.

This lecture aims to present a protocol for diagnosis, case selection and the most current technique for simple and predictable resolution of these clinical conditions.

The main objective of this training is:

  • Train dentists to identify, diagnose and select everyday clinical cases for the use of a less invasive approach;
  • Know the technique and its procedures.

At the end of this training, the trainee will be able to:

  • To apply the correct diagnosis and choice of the most appropriate technique for clinical situations of pulpitis in clinical practice.

Improvement of the perio-prosthetic interface in complex rehabilitations with implants (Hélder Moura, March 30, 2024)

Implantology currently requires the participation of several disciplines of dentistry: an accurate diagnosis and adjusted and personalized planning for each patient are now fundamental to achieving good aesthetic results.

The objective of rehabilitation with implants is not only to achieve successful osseointegration, achieving more aesthetic and functional rehabilitation is imperative.

Bone reconstruction and soft tissue manipulation in the peri-implant area is the main challenge in daily cases, in order to reestablish the correct pink/white balance.

The main objective of this training is:

  • Recognize that reverse planning and guided prosthetic implantology are real allies, as well as soft tissue grafting techniques, sutures, coronal advancement flaps and tunneling approaches, prosthetic guided soft tissue healing concepts, provisionalization around implants and pontics , and finally, a digital prosthetic and surgical workflow.

At the end of this training, the trainee will be able to:

  • In short, know the main concepts of peri-implant biology, the importance of tissue quality and volume and surgical and non-surgical techniques, fundamental in the treatment of complex oral rehabilitation.
