Casa da Madeira in Toronto, Canada, will hold its 37th Cultural Week from April 19th to 27th.

Madeiran singer João Luís Mendonça, who will perform some original songs of his own, and Grupo Só Rir are the special guests of this event and will perform on the 26th and 27th.

That week’s program also includes singers Décio Gonçalves and João Neves, Madeirans who have lived in Canada for many years. There will be a session dedicated to Max and singer Aria de Castro and her band, Grupo Os Pestinhas and Rancho Folclórica da Casa da Madeira will also perform.

On April 25th, the Madeiran library “Gilberto Araújo” will be inaugurated in posthumous tribute to the Madeiran who was one of the great promoters of Casa da Madeira in Toronto.

During the week there will be dinners with typical Madeiran menus and the exhibition “Route of Madeiran municipalities” will be on display.

Founded in 1963, Casa da Madeira has always been important both for Madeirans and for immigrants from other parts of Portugal who settled in Toronto. That institution also has land in the municipality of Georgina, called Madeira Park, where it holds many festivities during the summer months, attracting thousands of participants every year.

Casa da Madeira promoted activities as an informal association for two years, being officially registered in 1965 under the name of Canadian Madeira Club but, in 1987, adopting the current name of Casa da Madeira Community Center.

The founders of that association included several pioneers who arrived in Halifax on May 1950, 60 as part of the first contingent from Portugal, consisting of 13 men. Casa da Madeira remains active and always has a large influx of people in the initiatives it promotes, with Cultural Week being the one that has the greatest impact.
