It’s quiet in the city to listen to the serenades.
It is now tradition for the first day of the Monumental Festas do Enterro da Gata to be dedicated to academic tradition and culture. The Academic Association of the University of Minho (AAUMinho) confirmed, what was already expected by the students, and, on May 3rd, Friday, students are called to the city center to attend the Velório da Gata, which will be followed of the usual serenades.
In the publicity, AAUMinho described the tradition. “In the case of students from Braga, the ‘cat’ symbolized failure at the end of the school year. By being buried, or rather, thrown into the water during a public ceremony, of great popular impact, in an atmosphere of revelry and freedom, naturally animated by alcohol, the incarnation of Evil that the specter of disapproval represented was removed.”
This night, which for many is a milestone on their journey, whether because of the nostalgia of the end or for the first time in costume, invites students, families and the entire community to enjoy the voices of Sina.
