Ambiente Magazine celebrates its 30th anniversary and to celebrate this special date it asked those responsible for the various sectors in the Environment which policies and strategies they consider will be predominant in the next 30 years. Here is the comment from Paulo Praça, president of the ESGRA Board of Directors.

From the outset, decisions and options are effectively taken based on structured medium and long-term planning so that in 10, 20 or 30 years, regardless of adjustments and resolution of concrete situations that are inherent to any reality, we will not be managing situations with the level of urgency, as currently.

It is important that decisions are not postponed or avoided at both national and local levels regarding the best and most sustainable technical and technological options to provide the country with the capacity to sustainably treat the waste it produces. Treatment, transformation and elimination solutions will always be necessary, and it will not be viable as a country and as a community to avoid their existence.

It is necessary to change the way we produce, how we consume and how we treat what remains after consumption, with the awareness that the quality of tomorrow depends on how we manage today.

And this change has to be internalized, just like the role of the waste sector in the hierarchy of public policies, in order to channel the investments that are necessary for new facilities, for more and better human resources and to digitize the sector, which has a fundamental role in optimizing resources.

In short, for the transition in the waste sector to occur, it is necessary to invest a lot so that the sector can also fulfill its role as an agent of the transition in the development paradigm.
