An attempted theft of a safe happened this evening. Parish Council “regrets and repudiates” the situation and asks for more presence from the authorities. GNR is already investigating
The Silgueiros Church, in the municipality of Viseu, was reportedly the target of an attempted theft. The case happened in the early hours of Monday (April 1) and, although the theft did not take place, it caused several damages to the temple.
To access the interior of the church “locks, doors and walls were damaged”, explained the president of the Silgueiros Parish Council, Rui Mendes, who also said “he repudiates any theft, destruction of property or any act against any institution in cause”.
“An act like this at a time like this is regrettable. There was an attempted theft of a safe, without any effect, but they ended up destroying walls and doors and creating several expenses for the Church”, he highlighted.
The mayor now hopes that the authorities will be able to find those responsible, showing himself available to “help as much as possible”, and states that he will continue to work so that the GNR reinforces its presence in the parish.
“It’s something I’ve done [solicitar a presença das autoridades] and the GNR has been seen more often in Silgueiros. People cannot go unpunished, they cannot think they live in another world and they have to understand that there are rules. I will continue to do my work because I am interested in maintaining security in Silgueiros”, he highlighted.
Rui Mendes makes no secret of the fact that “the ideal would be to have a GNR post in Silgueiros”, a desire that he admits “is not easy”. “It could be a fight I could have. I understand it’s not always possible, but it would be ideal. And whoever talks about Silgueiros, talks about other parishes”.
The president of the board states that “there is no record of episodes of this kind”, despite recognizing that there are problems that need to be resolved. “We had some drug-related problems, but we will continue to work to ensure that these situations do not happen. We have to solve the problems that exist, Silgueiros has to be a safe village for those who live there, for the elderly, for the less elderly and for children”, he said.
A GNR source confirmed the attempted theft of “an offertory box” and that “efforts are being taken” in order to find the possible perpetrators.
