The Mayor of Braga, Ricardo Rio assured yesterday, Tuesday, that the work to requalify the Infias Junction – the city’s road “cancer”, due to traffic constraints – can progress this semester, stressing that, “ If the PS were still Government, perhaps this would not happen.

The mayor thus responded to councilor Artur Feio, from the PS, who criticized, in a meeting of the Municipal Executive, what he considers to be “the great delay in launching the requalification work of the Infias Junction, whose construction, announced a year ago by the Municipality, it has not yet taken effect.

On the occasion, Artur Feio said that the current mandate of the PSD/CDS majority is being “a failure”, also exemplifying the alleged delays in the projects for the redevelopment of the old São Geraldo cinema, in the Sete Fontes eco-monumental park and in the launch of the construction of a new Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) by the municipal company Agere. “Nothing has progressed and nothing will be completed in this mandate”, he lamented, saying that, in the case of the ETAR, nine million euros of European funds have already been lost.

Artur Feio also criticized the recently completed renovation work on Avenida da Liberdade, calling it “cosmetic, with no advantage for traffic”. The PS’s position was followed by the CDU councilor, Vítor Rodrigues, who also voted against the 2023 Activity and Accounts Report, which was under discussion, and which was approved by the majority.

In response, Ricardo Rio said that the ETAR’s financing is guaranteed, highlighting that it could be higher than that amount.

Regarding the requalification of São Geraldo and the annex building of Pé Alado, where the Ctividade Parish Council is located, the mayor revealed that the project made for its transformation into a Media Arts Center has to be changed, given that the University of Minho concluded that the building has “structural pathologies” that must be corrected. He added that, in the end, its purchase from the Archdiocese of Braga will be negotiated.

In this regard, Vítor Rodrigues and Adolfo Macedo regretted that the Municipality pays 12,500 euros per month to the Diocese for the rent of Pé Alado, which, after seven years, already represents “561 thousand euros”.
