Forced evictions, racism, gender-based violence, police violence and poor prison conditions. These are some of the threats to Human Rights in Portugal.

The picture is outlined in Amnesty International’s annual report on Human Rights around the world, released this Wednesday.

Regarding Portugal, the organization recalls data that indicate that the number of families without adequate housing tripled compared to 2018. The organization’s executive director in Portugal highlights the problems identified in the processes of demolishing tents in various locations across the country.

“In several municipalities in the country there continue to be evictions that take place in a conflictive manner, which proves that public policies and good practices are not being followed. Not everything goes”, laments the person in charge.

Pedro Neto also describes the continuation of problems in prisons and in the way detainees are treated. And he points out that successive sentences mean that there are elderly people still in a state of confinement.

At the international level, people continue to be treated as collateral damage in war conflicts.

The executive director of Amnesty in Portugal explains that this implies that “no one is safe, no civilian, no woman, no child, no elderly person, not even humanitarian workers”.
