Film meetings take more than 3,000 students from all over Europe to Viana do Castelo

More than three thousand students, hundreds of teachers from more than 100 schools in Europe participate in the 24th edition of the Viana do Castelo Cinema Meetings, between the 2nd and 14th of May, the organization revealed today.

“They are students and teachers from schools in the municipality, the region and the country, but also from Galicia and other European countries. This year, a film school from Slovakia is represented”, pointed out the executive director of Encontros de Cinema, Rui Ramos.

The person in charge, who spoke during the press conference to introduce the event, referred to the Frontal Views section, aimed at students from film, audiovisual or communication schools, and participants in documentary courses promoted by other national and international entities. .

Rui Ramos said that in the competitive section for the promotion of documentary cinema, produced in schools in Portugal, Galicia and Portuguese-speaking countries, 16 films will be in competition.

At Ação10, a school video festival that promotes audiovisual practice and culture in a school context, 29 films will be in competition.

“Encontros de Cinema has evolved and adapted over 24 years and is now the only festival, nationally, with a focus on training for cinema and connecting with the educational community”, highlighted Rui Ramos.

The schedule of Cinema Meetings, organized by the Associação AO NORTE, in partnership with the Chamber of Viana do Castelo, will be distributed between the Teatro Municipal Sá de Miranda, the cinema Verde Viana and the Escola Superior de Educação (ESE), among other locations.

The 13th International Cinema Conference, which takes place from the 6th to the 10th of May, at ESE, is one of the highlights of the program, marked by the “disclosure of projects related to central themes of cinema and audiovisual – cinema and school, cinema : art, science and culture, and photography and memory”.

During the meetings, the “Work in Progress” seminar will also take place, the Revolutions in/of Cinema round table, the Anthropology, Cinema, Education course, the Cinema and School Forum – pedagogical practices in Portugal and Galicia and the film cycle School in Cinema.

A Luso-Galaic Meeting of Cineclubs, the concert film “A Floresta”, Cinema for the Family, exhibitions, training workshops for teachers and students, the launch of the 27th edition of the publication “O Filme da Minha Vida” and the public presentation of videos made in schools, within the scope of the projects “Histories in the Square”, “CINEpoesia” and “Shall we make a film?”, are other highlights of the meeting.

Present at the meeting with journalists, the councilor for Culture and Education, Manuel Vitorino, said it was “a landmark event in the city due to the various dimensions it encompasses”, highlighting the interconnection between “the binomial culture and education”.

“There is a pedagogical intention and the formation of audiences. Cinema is a vehicle for disseminating the state of art, science, and disseminating culture in its multiple dimensions. It is a very well-structured event that deserves to be cherished by all Vivian residents, neighbors in Galicia and everyone who visits us”, said Manuel Vitorino.
