The Union of Parishes of Chamusca and Pinheiro Grande holds the traditional “Apanha da Espiga” on May 9th, Ascension Thursday, a tradition that is a very special symbol of the municipality’s customs and traditions.

Participants will gather at 8:00 am, next to Jardim Joaquim Maria Cabeça (Jardim Maria Vaz), and then head to the region’s fields for the traditional cob picking, in carts, carts, bicycles or on foot. At 10 am, after harvesting the cob, there will be a shared snack.

Ascension Thursday is the most important day of the annual festivals in the municipality of Chamusca, and as tradition dictates, the cob is harvested in the fields of the region where the cob is made up of three ears of wheat, three yellow marigolds and three poppies, plus a sprig of olive tree in flower, a branch of vine with the cluster in formation and a rosemary or rosemary plant in flower.

The ears mean plenty of bread; marigolds, wealth; the poppies, love and life; the olive tree, oil and peace; the vine, wine and joy; rosemary or rosemary, health and strength.
