Meeting addressed themes common to both archipelagos.

The Regional Secretary of Agriculture and Environment, Rafaela Fernandes, accompanied by representatives of the departments under her jurisdiction, the Regional Director of Environment and Climate Action, Ara Oliveira and the Board of Directors of the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation, Manuel Filipe and Paulo Oliveira, met this morning with the Vice-Counsellor of the Presidency of the Canary Islands, Octavio Caraballo, and the Vice-Counsellor for the Ecological Transition and Fight against Climate Change, Julieta Schallenberg.

A meeting that comes at an important time considering that it precedes the 43rd General Assembly of the Islands Commission of the Conference of Peripheral and Maritime Regions, which takes place between today and tomorrow in the Azores. This meeting is still of particular relevance as there will soon be European elections and an important framework of community support in the context of the ecological transition is beginning.

On the table were themes common to both archipelagos and projects and possible partnerships in the field of sustainability, the 2030 Agenda and the Ecological Transition were identified.

Thus, opportunities were presented, among others, in the mitigation and monitoring of phenomena driven by climate change, namely the massive presence of sargassum and microalgae in recent years in all Macaronesian archipelagos, in the different methods and techniques experimented in coastal protection and in forest management, but also in the energy transition, agricultural markets and practices, food waste and the circular economy.

Interreg MAC was another of the topics discussed as one of the privileged financial instruments to support the implementation of strategies in the fields of agriculture, nature conservation and the environment, with the advantage of fostering cooperation and exchange of experiences, in areas such as promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency, disaster risk and ecosystem resilience, circular economy and nature protection and conservation.

The work took place in an environment that promoted synergy and cooperation, in fact, as has been the hallmark of the fruitful relations with this neighboring Macaronesian archipelago, leaving the opportunity to resume the establishment of the Macaronesian Cooperation Center.
