The book “Guarda. From origins to the present”, a work composed of three parts and four volumes. In the first one you can read a « brief geographical framework of Guarda, it begins in the Upper Paleolithic, as the oldest settlements in the region date back to this Era, goes through the Roman Period and extends until the end of the Middle Ages (15th centuries -XVI)”. The second volume corresponds to «the so-called Ancien Régime (16th century to the Liberal Revolution of 1820), an expression that reflects a complex reality, designating simultaneously a political organization and a society with its own institutions, government practices and mentalities», and the last part addresses the Guard in Contemporary Portugal, between 1820 and 2020, «heir of the Liberal Revolution, which caused a profound rupture, by dismantling the political and social structure of the Old Regime. Guarda, like the entire country, although slowly, enters a new phase in its history, which shapes and conditions the present reality».

The presentation of the work was tonight, the 24th, at ExpoEcclesia, in Guarda, and is the result of a collaboration between the municipality of Guarda, the Polytechnic Institute of Guarda and the Center for Population, Economy and Society Studies – CEPESE.

“Guard. From origins to current affairs» was a work written by around 40 researchers from various parts of the country, over four years, and one of the biggest difficulties in the entire process, according to CEPESE coordinator, Fernando Sousa, was the difficulty in finding documentary sources. Regarding the Roman Period and the Middle Ages, the professor with a doctorate in history says that «there was no information and it now exists with the completion of this book».

Inaugurating the book presentation ceremony was the Guarda Cultural Intervention Group, “Reflexo Imperfeito”.
