Two days before its completion, the European Marathon will bring more than 20 thousand people, from 91 different nationalities, to Aveiro. The 4th edition of the race takes place on April 28th, but this year there are new features that make this Marathon a longer event.
From April 25th, Expo Marathon opens its doors, dedicated to sport with 40 exhibitors, a restaurant area, cultural moments and even a traditional Chinese medicine fair.
Organized by Global Sport, promoted by the Municipality of Aveiro and Turismo do Centro de Portugal and with the support of the Municipality of Ílhavo, the race is divided into 4 distances. The marathon is 42km, the half-marathon is 21km, a 10km run or a 5km walk. Athletes will be able to run and walk side by side with the natural and urban landscapes of Aveiro, Esgueira, Gafanha da Nazaré and Barra.
“The Marathon of a Thousand Emotions”, as it is nicknamed, is an official World Athletics race with the Road RLabel seal. Aurora Cunha and João Neto are the initiative’s ambassadors. Known to the Portuguese, the first was 3 times world athletics champion and sold four major world marathons. The second is “The Marathon Runner of Impossible Things, after having done 7 marathons in 7 consecutive days on 7 continents. In 2023 João Neto completed the 42km “pushing a wheelchair with four fascinating children with special needs”. This year the challenge is the same, but with 8 children.
The European Marathon will affect traffic on some arteries in Aveiro and Ílhavo:
To the registrations are open until April 27th. The secretariat is located at Cais da Fonte Nova. It is available from 2pm on April 25th until 8am on the 28th.
