The Granjinhos fountain, in the city of Braga, ordered to be erected by Archbishop D. Diogo de Sousa in 1509, is classified as a monument of municipal interest, according to a notice published today in Diário da República.

Signed by the Mayor of Braga, Ricardo Rio, the notice states that, as O MINHO reported, the classification was approved by the executive on April 2nd.

Given that the fountain is located within the Urban Rehabilitation Area of the Historic Center of Braga, it was not necessary to create a special protection zone.

The fountain was located for more than 450 years on the old Rua dos Granjinhos, which connected the current Largo Carlos Amarante to the demolished church of São Lázaro.

In the 60s of the 20th century, it was transferred to the wall of the courtyard of the São Sebastião chapel, next to Largo Paulo Orósio, because the hospital’s expansion works collided with the street layout of Rua dos Granjinhos.

In March 2016, the fountain was dismantled and moved to the Palácio do Raio, very close to its original location.

It is a Renaissance fountain with a rectangular back.

It bears the coat of arms of Archbishop D. Diogo de Sousa.
