Remembering the achievements of the last year, and preparing for the future: that was the motto of the ceremony, which began with an overview of the main achievements of its community, including scientific research, innovation and connection to society.

In your message to the community, Luís Carriço, Director of SCIENCES, referred to the historical context of the Faculty, with particular focus on the 25th of April and the fight for freedom: “Our commitment to excellence in research and innovation is our differentiator, reflected in the best per capita performance of the University from Lisbon. But it is in the quality of our work that we distinguish ourselves.”

An example of this was the intervention of the guest speaker Virginia Dignum: former SCIENCE student, she is currently Professor of AI at Umeå University (Sweden) and one of 38 experts elected internationally to the United Nations High-Level Advisory Body on AI. According to the speaker, the fact that Artificial Intelligence needs ‘brakes’ does not mean that this inhibits innovation; on the contrary, it encourages it.

Two very special tributes marked the ceremony, awarded by the Management, in relation to 2023: the Jorge Miguel MirandaRecognition for the Impact of SCIENCES on Society, and the HortaFCULRecognition for Impact on the Science Community.

The winning projects of the 1st edition of the Innovation Project Competitionpromoted by CIÊNCIAS and FCiências.ID, with the support of Tec Labs: the projects Lusoturfcoordinated by Cristina Cruz (cE3c), and TAMUK, coordinated by Andreia Valente (CQE-CIÊNCIAS). Each of these projects will receive funding worth €50,000.

CIÊNCIAS is a house made up of students. And he gave them a voice, with the message of Victor FernandesPresident of Lisbon Faculty of Sciences Student Association (AEFCL). Furthermore, the ceremony featured the traditional and long-awaited moment for students, families and friends: the distinctions that recognize the excellence of those who distinguished themselves in the last academic year. Several dozen students took to the stage to receive distinctions awarded not only by CIÊNCIAS but also by the various partner entities that year after year renew their support for our students, to whom we are very grateful.
